When gorgeous women date men who aren’t nearly as stunning as they are, it’s commonly known to be because of one thing: he’s hilarious. He makes her laugh.
Speaking as a woman, I can confidently say many of us find humour to be an aphrodisiac.
I don’t mean the lame, half-hearted jokes guys make when they expect forced laughter from their friends. I mean well-crafted, effortless humour that reveals the intellect behind it.
Why is humour an attraction filter for women?
When it comes to relationships, humour shows a man is putting in real effort to please a woman and entertain her, which often comes from a place of care. He’s conscious of her sense of humour and intelligence.
Cracking jokes towards the object of a man’s affection is often among his first attempts at approaching a woman. What women appreciate, at humour’s core, is smarts because this correlates with a man’s ability to provide. It also shows a man can successfully take the lead in social situations.
A study published by the University of Kansas found men love women who laugh at their humour because it shows the woman is open and receptive to him. She might just be open to a relationship with him, too.
But can women’s hilarity always stand in for good looks in a man’s eyes?
Not always.
You might be thinking that’s unfair, but the reality is men and women often have a different set of values.
Straight men especially value physical attractiveness. A 2017 Pew Research study shows how, though results may vary from other studies.
It’s important to note this is not a case of men not valuing intelligence — they do!
Intelligence unites men and women in being an attractive trait for both sexes, according to a study from the Association for Psychological Science.
What does the science say?
There are slight variations when it comes to the field of attraction, and those differences come embedded in our biology.
Research shows women are more attracted to auditory stimuli — sounds you can hear. Meanwhile, men are more attracted by visual stimuli — anything seen by the eyes.
Therefore, it’s not a stretch to say women are drawn more towards what comes out of a man’s mouth, while men are drawn to what their eyes settle on.
No wonder women find being humorous a killer aphrodisiac, and men find beauty to be so. All the while, intelligence lies somewhere in the middle of attractive qualities.
There’s no harm in being both!
